Red Zambezi
Published in Hardcover by J & T Pub (August, 1989)
Author: Joe E. Hale
Average review score:

If you are interested in Rhodesia, read this book.
What happened to Rhodesia? Answer: It was offered as a sacrifice by colonial powers, to appease left-leaning world powers. This is a story sad, but true. Read "Red Zambezi", and find out more.

A very good novel about the mercenary experience!
Like Bob Mayer and Gale Rivers, Joe Hale is also a para-military pro turned writer, and actually a very good one. These retired military writers have a very common but excellent specialty: Their writtings were based upon realistic experiences, therefore, they could write in an accurate and concised style which is very good for a total logic and precised reading. This is a true and personal experience of the writer who did fight as a mercenary in Rhodesia. It's a shame that a wonderful writer could only find a tiny publisher to marketing his book and lost silently.

Abstraction in Art and Nature
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 1993)
Author: Nathan Cabot Hale
Average review score:

Facinating approach to the study of form
Hale has thought deeply on the meaning of forms and has found endless relationships between them. All organic matter follows laws which are written into their structure. For the artist, understanding these laws means that each new object is no longer unique, but part of a larger whole. This means that each new object (water mountains, trees, bodies) can be related to others, making the "new" object more familear

A group of Army misfits are adopted by a tragic hero.
Being drafted into the Army brings Addison into contact with many misfits. He is friend to some and father figure to others. The letters he gets from his wife become a lifeline for each of the men. Unfortunately, Addison has a fatal flaw that makes his a tragic hero. I truly did not want this book to end for Addison and wife were so wonderful.

American Express Travel Guide
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (November, 1992)
Authors: American Express, Mitchell Beazley, and Sheila Hale
Average review score:

Rewritten/republished as Travel&Leisure:Amsterdam
The American Express Travel Guide of Amsterdam (1992), written by Derek Blythe, has been re-written by Carol Winkelman and re-published as Travel&Leisure: Amsterdam (1997). Travel&Leisure magazine, in conjunction with Macmillan Travel, designed this new version of the book for a larger audience that includes young travelers, budget travelers, babyboomer travelers, discriminating travelers, and business travelers. The new book is a combination of traditional and offbeat travel guide, helping the reader find his/her way to hotels, restaurants, museums, and historical sites while also taking him/her "inside" Amsterdam to experience its cafe culture, lively arts scene, and famous nightlife. The new book, like The American Express Guide, includes an excursion to Rotterdam that leads the reader from the historic to the ultramodern.

Animals (Hands-On Minds-On Science Series)
Published in Paperback by Teacher Created Materials (01 June, 1994)
Authors: Janet Hale and Ann Flagg
Average review score:

A favorite resource for homeschooling
when I first dared to start writing my own curriculums, I wasted a lot of money on materials. However, once I found this series of books, they became the centerpiece of my science curriculums. Each book in the series contains easy to understand information-important for a teacher like me who prefers history to science, but who is raising a scientist. There are ready-made worksheets, vocabularies, projects, and tie-ins to other subjects. The books are in black and white line drawings, making them inexpensive to copy. I found books for nearly every subject I wanted to cover when my children were younger, and even now, when they are in high school, we refer back to the information in them while doing research. I recommend these books regularly to readers of my homeschooling column on BellaOnline.com.

Antique Garden Ornament: Two Centuries of American Taste
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (October, 1999)
Authors: Barbara Israel, Mark Hampton, and Mick Hales
Average review score:

A fantastic book!
At long last, an authoritative book on garden ornament in America! Barbara Israel delivers a beautiful tome with scholarly punch in her Antique Garden Ornament: Two Centuries of American Taste. Many books exist on gardens and landscape history, but none addresses the issue of the statues, fountains, and furniture used within them with such depth and clarity as Ms. Israel. In addition to the chapters themselves, the catalogue of objects in the back of the book and the list of makers provide a greatly needed reference for this growing field. I highly recommend this book.

Applied New Testament Commentary
Published in Paperback by Kingsway Communications (1996)
Author: T. Hale
Average review score:

A Layman's Comments
Bottom line up front - if this book is not the second book you own after the Bible, you're missing a great book! As we do our best to walk the straight and narrow path, we are often confronted, yes even confounded by, "what does scripture really mean regarding..." Unfortunately, each and every demonination may give you a different interpretation on God's Word; however, the Applied New Testament Commentary helps you sort through the chaff - without being biased towards any particular mindset or ministry. Further, each chapter helps lay out several different "solutions" to the most troubling questions (homosexuality, Holy Spirit Baptism, and what defines a Christian marriage) while always maintaining a scriptural basis for the answer. Finally, if even after reading the book you find yourself siding with the most common beliefs of many other Christians - you will find yourself much better equipped to give an answer to the hope that lies within you. Finally, and maybe most importantly, it doesnt' read like an encyclopaedia. Its clearly and concisely broken down into easily understandable chapters. Would I recommend it to a friend - unquestionably. As a matter of fact, I am purchasing one for a friend today!

Artists and Warfare in the Renaissance
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (July, 1900)
Author: J. R. Hale
Average review score:

Recommended reading for students of the Renaissance era.
I have been over the illustrations in this book with a magnifying glass and the level of detail for the large battle scenes is very high and works very well to compare the German and Italian attitudes to both art and war, and to the art of war itself. But this book has a deeper meaning as it explores an explosive confluence in both the technology of war and the artist's ability to represent it, which makes this a very important interdisciplinary work with both a narrow and broad focus.

This makes Hales work which was supported by a number of very respected foundations as interesting to the military historian to the student of intellectual historian. For the matter the historical recreationist or interpreter would find this book a treasure as an idea book that could get him to the nuts and bolts of the period in a very literal sense.

Starting with a contextualizing introduction sections follow dealing with: The German Military Genre; The German Image of The Soldier; Italy Soldiers and Soldiers and Soldiering; North and South Contrasts I; North and South Contrasts II; The Reproduction of the Battle Italy; The Reproduction of the Battle Germany and Switzerland; War and Values The Vocabulary; Soldiers and Religious Art; The Epilogue (Beyond The German and Italian Worlds)

Artists And Warfare In The Renaissance by J.R. Hale Yale University Press is an essential work for any one who seeks to gain a new perspective in their approach to the Renaissance. Hales is as interesting and valid in the first months of the New Millennium as it was when the work was created more than a decade ago.

278 pages with index, bibliography, notes and attribution for each of the 345 of works represented and cited. Many of these works are in color, representing a wide range of media, including but not limited to paintings woodcuts etchings calligraphy, and of course book illustrations.
